Around Lobith
River Rijn
High Level
Jan. 2011
(video)B&B Slaap is situated between two old dikes wich protected the old village against floodings from the river Rijn.
In Lobith is a windmill called 'de Coornmolen'.
A so called
Beltmill. On saturday's and wednesday's it is open for a little guided tour
inside.
Lobith is
located in the centre of national park 'de Gelderse Poort'. A beautiful area with old riverbranches and swamps from the rivers Rijn, Waal
and IJssel.
The area has had centuries of struggle against the water from the Rijn. If you watch carefully there are a lot of traces to be found.
The river in his dominant way has determined the looks of the surrounding area. If you look around and see the old river branches, ponds and dikes it tells you how it has developed the landscape.
In Lobith, on the other side of the dike is an old branch of the Rijn. In this area called 'de Geuzenwaard' it is licit to hike across. Exploring this beautiful piece of nature you might come across the wild cattle living and grazing here and keeping the vegetation open and more various.
When
you are there you can imagine this is the place where once the big river Rijn
searched its way .
If you look on the map its very clearly to see where the river used to
flow. You can follow this trail from the Geuzenwaard al across the area,
near the German border and along the villages Herwen and Aerdt until the
village Pannerden.
A 'must see' for nature lovers is the area between Herwen and Pannerden.
There is a 14km hiking trail, crossing the old branches by a manual operated
ferry (pulling the rope)
(85% unpaved, + 4 uur)
Silence and peace is characteristic here, the sounds of birds are alway's
heard.
Nijmegen, Arnhem, Doetinchem and in Germany,
Emmerich and Kleve are all max. 30 car minutes away.
By a small ferry you can walk and cycle to Millingen aan de Rijn on the
other side of the Rijn.
